This shrimp has a large claw capable of producing a powerful snap. Its coloration is generally orange or red with patterns. It lives in pairs or groups with a goby that acts as a lookout. It digs burrows in the sand. It is diurnal and feeds on small invertebrates and detritus. Its claw can stun prey. It reaches about 5 cm. It is a fascinating species for reef aquariums.

Temperature 24-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025. A minimum tank size of 30 liters is sufficient. A deep sandy substrate is needed for burrowing. It feeds on small pieces of fish, shrimp, and frozen foods. Moderate lighting and moderate flow are suitable. It is generally peaceful but can be territorial with other shrimp. Cohabitation with a goby is recommended. Captive breeding is possible but difficult.
