Tiger barb reaches 7 cm. Its body is deep and laterally compressed, silvery to golden with four vertical black bands. The fins are red in males. It is a lively and gregarious fish that lives in schools. It may show fin-nipping behavior if not kept in a large enough group. It is very hardy and adapts to various conditions. Breeding is possible in aquariums.

Omnivorous, accepts all types of food. Avoid keeping with long-finned or slow fish (gouramis, angelfish). A large group reduces aggression. It is a hardy fish suitable for beginners.
