Beschreibung
The bleeding heart tetra has a slightly translucent silver body, a bright red heart-shaped spot behind the gill cover, and a tall dorsal fin in males. It reaches 6–7 cm. It is a schooling fish that must live in groups of at least 6. It is active but peaceful, ideal for a softwater community aquarium. Dominant males develop a longer dorsal fin and more intense colors. It enjoys dense vegetation and hiding places.

Minimum 80 L aquarium for a group. Soft acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0, GH 1–8, KH 1–5) at 24–28 °C. Moderate filtration, subdued lighting. Omnivorous diet: flakes, brine shrimp, daphnia. Compatible with other small peaceful tetras, corydoras, and dwarf cichlids. Avoid overly active or aggressive fish. Sensitive to high nitrates, keep NO3 < 20 mg/L. Weekly water changes of 20–30%.
