The common pleco is a large armored catfish, often sold as a cleaner but reaching an imposing size.
Description
Hypostomus plecostomus can reach 50 cm in aquariums, even larger in the wild. Its body is elongated, covered with bony plates. The sucker mouth is wide. Coloration is dark brown to gray with lighter spots. The fins are large and spiny. It is a nocturnal and territorial fish. It produces a lot of waste. It feeds on algae, wood (necessary for digestion) and detritus. It can become aggressive towards small fish.

This large catfish lives in rivers and floodplains, on muddy or sandy bottoms. It frequents calm waters with low current. It hides under logs and among roots. The water is often turbid, with a neutral to slightly acidic pH.

Care notes
A very large aquarium (minimum 400 L) is necessary. Water should be well filtered, pH 6.5-7.5, GH 5-15, temperature 24-28°C. Moderate current is appreciated. Provide hiding places and especially wood to gnaw. Omnivorous: give vegetables, algae wafers, and meaty foods. Beware of rapid growth. Not suitable for small tanks. Compatible with robust medium to large fish.
