Description
Nannostomus mortenthaleri reaches up to 3.5 cm. Its body is elongated with an upward mouth. It is characterized by a bright coral red body with a horizontal black line from snout to caudal fin. The fins are often red. It is a peaceful, schooling surface-dwelling fish. It is endemic to the Rio Nanay in Peru. Its color is more intense in soft, acidic water. It is highly prized by aquarists for its beauty.

Care notes
Aquarium of at least 40 liters, planted with floating plants and subdued lighting. Soft and acidic water (pH 5.5-7.0, GH 2-10) at 23-28°C. Diet: small insects, brine shrimp, daphnia, and fine dry food enriched with carotenoids to maintain color. Compatible with other small peaceful fish. Keep in groups of at least 6. Avoid aggressive tankmates. Regular water changes. Sensitive to nitrates.
