Highly effective herbivorous snail for cleaning algae from glass and rocks. Its spotted conical shell is very decorative.
Description
Trochus maculatus has a solid conical shell, cream to brown with irregular dark spots. It typically measures 3-5 cm in diameter. It moves actively over all surfaces, grazing on green algae, brown algae, and diatoms. It is both diurnal and nocturnal, often visible during the day. Its horny operculum allows it to close tightly. It is very hardy and adapts well to established aquariums. It never attacks corals or sessile invertebrates.

Care notes
Ideal temperature 24-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025. A tank of at least 60 liters is recommended for a small group. It feeds mainly on existing algae, but may accept algae tablets or blanched vegetables. Nitrates should stay below 20 ppm and phosphates below 0.1 ppm. It is fully compatible with peaceful fish and corals. Avoid predatory fish such as triggerfish or wrasses. Drip acclimation is advised. It can be kept in groups without aggression.
