Description

Tropheus polli has an elongated, laterally compressed body with a dark brown or black base coloration and a broad bright yellow or orange band on the flank. The fins are often edged with blue. Males are slightly larger and more colorful than females. This species is highly territorial and forms strict hierarchies. It feeds mainly on algae and biofilm scraped from rocks. In aquariums, it can become very aggressive towards conspecifics if the group is too small. Reproduction is by mouthbrooding, with the female carrying eggs and fry in her mouth for several weeks.

Care notes

Maintain a temperature of 24–27°C, pH 8.0–9.0, GH 10–20, and KH 8–12. A minimum tank volume of 200 liters is required for a group of at least 10 individuals. Diet should be primarily vegetable-based: spirulina, blanched vegetables, herbivore pellets. Avoid high-protein animal foods. Weekly water changes of 20–30% are important. Filtration must be strong with good water movement. Compatibility is limited to other robust Tanganyikan cichlids. Avoid peaceful or small fish. A rocky decor with plenty of hiding places is essential.
