The Montezuma Swordtail is a peaceful freshwater fish, prized for the sword-like extension on the male's tail fin. It originates from Mexico and breeds readily in aquariums.
Description
The Montezuma Swordtail has an elongated and laterally compressed body. Males are distinguished by a long lower extension of the caudal fin, called a sword, which can reach the length of the body. The base coloration is silvery-grey with bluish reflections and a dark lateral stripe. Females are duller and lack the sword. It is an active, schooling fish that lives in groups. It is known for its ability to hybridize with other Xiphophorus species. In aquariums, it is easy to keep and breeds quickly.

Care notes
A tank of at least 80 liters is recommended for a small group. Ideal temperature is between 22 and 26°C, pH 7.0-8.0, GH 10-20°d. Efficient filtration and regular water changes are necessary. Diet is omnivorous: accepts flakes, pellets, live and frozen foods. It is best to keep one male for two or three females to avoid stress. Compatible with other peaceful fish of similar size. Beware of jumping, a lid is advised. Breeding is easy, females give birth to live fry.
