Australe killifish
Aphyosemion australe
The body is elongated and slender, with variable coloration depending on the population: generally metallic blue with red spots on the flanks and yellow-green fins. Males are more colorful than females. The caudal fin is often lyre-shaped. This species is a surface fish, enjoying calm and shaded areas. It is very active and sometimes jumps out of the water. In aquariums, it often stays near the surface. Adult size is 5-6 cm. Lifespan is 2-3 years. Reproduction is easy: eggs are laid on mops or fine-leaved plants.

Care
Care notes
A 30-liter aquarium is sufficient for a pair or trio (1 male to 2 females). The tank should be heavily planted with shaded areas and floating cover. Filtration should be gentle (sponge). Ideal temperature is 22-26°C, pH 6.0-7.0, hardness 2-8 dGH. Diet is carnivorous: artemia, daphnia, bloodworms, small insects. Avoid overly active or large tankmates. Water changes should be moderate (10-15% weekly). A lid is essential as they jump. Reproduction is easy: remove eggs regularly to prevent predation.
