Males have a blue head and body, a yellow-orange belly, and yellow dorsal and anal fins. Females are gray-brown. It is a maternal mouthbrooder. It inhabits shallow rocky areas. Males defend a territory but are less aggressive than mbunas. Coloration intensifies during breeding. It reaches about 12 cm.

Parameters identical to other peacocks: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, GH 10-20, KH 8-12. Minimum 200L tank for a group. Carnivorous diet: cichlid pellets and frozen foods. Compatible with other peacocks and haps, avoid aggressive mbunas. Keep a harem (1 male to 3-4 females). Regular water changes. Breeding similar to other Aulonocara.
