The body is oval, dark brown to black with light chevron-shaped lines. The fins are edged in blue. Juveniles are more colorful with more contrasted patterns. It has a sharp caudal spine. It is an active swimmer that constantly explores the decor. In the aquarium, it can become territorial towards other surgeonfish. It feeds mainly on benthic algae.

Temperature 24-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025. A minimum 400-liter aquarium is advised. Herbivorous diet: algae, nori, spirulina, vegetable supplements. Be careful with compatibility: avoid multiple males or similar species in a small volume. Provide hiding places and live rock. Strong filtration and moderate to strong flow are recommended. Nitrates should remain <20 mg/L, phosphates <0.1 mg/L.
