Danio rerio has an elongated, fusiform body with horizontal blue and silver stripes. It reaches up to 4 cm. It is a schooling and active fish that swims in groups. It is very hardy and adapts to various conditions. It breeds easily in the aquarium. Genetically modified varieties (GloFish) exist.

Care notes

Aquarium of at least 60 L for a school of 6 to 10 individuals. Neutral to slightly alkaline water (pH 6.5-7.5), soft to moderately hard (GH 5-15), temperature 22-26°C. They are omnivorous: accept flakes, pellets, artemia, and daphnia. A setup with plants and open swimming space is suitable. They are peaceful fish, compatible with many species. Breeding is simple: they spawn on a moss substrate.
