Favia matthaii forms massive or encrusting colonies, sometimes dome-shaped. Polyps are large and fleshy with short tentacles. Color ranges from brown to green, sometimes with purple hues. It is often confused with Favia pallida but differs by finer septa. It is a hardy species tolerating variable conditions. Growth is slow to moderate.
