Hypancistrus contradens
This fish measures 10-14 cm. Its body is elongated and moderately flattened. Coloration is light brown to grayish with a network of dark lines forming a reticulated or marbled pattern. The fins are often edged in white. Males have more developed odontodes on the opercles and the first rays of the pectoral fins. It is a nocturnal species but can be seen during the day if it feels secure. It is territorial but tolerates other bottom-dwellers. Breeding in aquariums is possible with caves.

Care notes
A minimum 100-liter tank is sufficient for one specimen. Water parameters: temperature 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, GH 4-12°dGH, KH 2-6°dKH. A decor with rocks, roots, and caves is essential. Filtration should be good with moderate flow. Omnivorous: accepts tablets, worms, brine shrimp, and vegetables. Compatible with peaceful medium-sized fish. Avoid aggressive cichlids. Weekly water changes of 20-30%.
