Monacanthus ciliatus
This fish has a laterally compressed body, color variable from gray to brown with reticulated patterns. The first dorsal fin consists of a robust spine, characteristic of Monacanthidae. Cutaneous fringes on the belly and head give it its common name. It can reach 20 cm in length. Its behavior is generally peaceful, but it can become territorial towards conspecifics. It uses its dorsal spine to wedge itself into crevices and for defense. It is an omnivore that grazes on algae and captures small invertebrates.

Care
Care notes
Maintain a temperature of 22–28 °C, pH 8.1–8.4, and salinity 1.020–1.025. A minimum tank of 200 liters is recommended for an adult specimen. Provide plenty of hiding places and open swimming space. Diet should include algae (nori, spirulina) and meaty foods (brine shrimp, mysis). It can be kept in a reef tank but may nip at some soft corals. Avoid cohabitation with aggressive fish. Good water flow and efficient filtration are necessary. Nitrates should remain below 20 mg/L and phosphates below 0.1 mg/L.
