Ocellated shell-dweller
Neolamprologus ocellatus
Neolamprologus ocellatus reaches up to 6 cm. It has characteristic ocellated spots on the dorsal fin. Like its cousin brevis, it lives in snail shells which it uses as shelter and spawning site. It is slightly more aggressive than brevis and defends a larger territory. Males are larger and develop longer fins. Reproduction occurs inside the shell, with both parents guarding eggs and fry. It is a hardy species and easy to breed in aquariums.
