Adult males reach about 7–8 cm and display an electric blue body with vertical black stripes, while females are yellow-orange. Their mouth is downward-facing for grazing algae. They are territorial and aggressive, especially among males. They live in groups in shallow rocky areas. Reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding.

Temperature 24–28°C, pH 7.5–8.5, GH 10–20. A minimum 100-liter tank is needed for a group. Diet should be rich in vegetables (spirulina, spinach). Avoid overly peaceful fish. Provide plenty of rocks to create territories. Change 20% water weekly. Strong filtration is recommended.
