The tomato clownfish reaches 14 cm. Its body is bright orange-red, with a single white vertical band just behind the eye. The fins are orange. The female is larger than the male. It is territorial but less aggressive than other clownfish. It can be kept in pairs or groups with a hierarchy. It is hardy and adapts well to captivity.

This clownfish lives in shallow coral reefs, often associated with the anemone Entacmaea quadricolor. It frequents lagoons and reef slopes where water is clear and well-oxygenated. Juveniles hide in the anemone's tentacles.
