Labeotropheus trewavasae is a colorful and territorial mbuna cichlid, prized for its blue and yellow patterns. It requires a rocky aquarium with plenty of hiding spots.

This cichlid has an elongated body and a downward-pointing mouth, adapted for grazing algae on rocks. Adult males display a metallic blue coloration with yellow or orange fins, while females are duller, often beige with dark bars. It can reach 12 cm. It is a highly territorial species, especially males, who vigorously defend their area. In an aquarium, it is best to keep one male with several females to dilute aggression. It sometimes digs in the substrate to create nests. Its constant grazing behavior makes it an excellent algae cleaner.

Maintain a temperature of 24–28°C, pH 7.5–8.5, and GH 10–20. A minimum tank volume of 200 liters is recommended for a group. The aquarium should be decorated with plenty of rocks forming caves and open swimming areas. Substrate can be fine sand. Diet should be primarily vegetable-based (spirulina, blanched vegetables) supplemented with protein. Avoid high-protein animal foods that can cause digestive issues. This species is aggressive towards conspecifics and similarly shaped fish; choose robust tankmates like other mbunas or bottom-dwellers. Weekly water changes of 20–30% are necessary. Filtration should be strong to maintain clean, oxygenated water.
