Descripción

Neolamprologus ocellatus reaches up to 6 cm. It has characteristic ocellated spots on the dorsal fin. Like its cousin brevis, it lives in snail shells which it uses as shelter and spawning site. It is slightly more aggressive than brevis and defends a larger territory. Males are larger and develop longer fins. Reproduction occurs inside the shell, with both parents guarding eggs and fry. It is a hardy species and easy to breed in aquariums.

Notas de cuidado

Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8-9, GH 10-20, KH 10-20. Sandy substrate and plenty of shells. Carnivorous diet: brine shrimp, bloodworms, pellets. A pair can manage in 40 liters, but a group needs 120 liters or more. Compatible with other peaceful Tanganyikan cichlids. Avoid very small fish that might be intimidated. Water parameters must be stable. Efficient filtration is recommended. Nitrates should stay below 20 mg/L.
