Tropheus brichardi has a robust, laterally compressed body with a striking yellow base and black vertical bars. Males are more intensely colored than females. They are herbivorous, feeding on aufwuchs (algae and microorganisms) in the wild. They are highly aggressive, especially towards conspecifics, and require large groups to spread aggression. They are maternal mouthbrooders. This species is endemic to the rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika. They are known for their intelligence and interactive behavior. They can be territorial and need plenty of rockwork.

Tropheus brichardi requires a tank of at least 200 liters, preferably larger, with extensive rockwork to create territories. Water parameters: pH 8.0-9.0, temperature 24-27°C, GH 10-20, KH 12-18. They are strict herbivores; feed spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables, and avoid high-protein foods. Keep in groups of at least 5-6 to reduce aggression. They are sensitive to water quality; perform weekly water changes. Nitrate should be kept below 20 ppm. They are not recommended for beginners. Compatible with other Tanganyikan cichlids of similar size and temperament. Provide strong filtration and water movement.
