Rough filter shrimp
Atya scabra
Família : Atyidae
Freshwater filter-feeding shrimp with a robust, rough body, adapted to fast currents. Feeds by filtering suspended particles.
Descrição
Atya scabra can reach 5 cm. Its carapace is covered with small spines and granules, hence its name. The anterior legs have highly developed filtering setae. It lives in high-current areas, clinging to rocks. It is a nocturnal species feeding on plankton and organic debris. Reproduction requires a brackish water larval stage. Males are smaller than females. Its peaceful behavior makes it a good inhabitant for a species-specific aquarium.
