Melanotaenia praecox is one of the smallest members of the family, reaching only 6 cm. Males display a metallic electric blue coloration with bright red fins, while females are more silvery. It is a gregarious fish that must live in groups of at least 6. It is very active and spends its time swimming in the water column. In the aquarium, it enjoys dense plants and open areas. Its small size makes it compatible with shrimp and other small fish.

Aquarium of at least 100 liters for a group, but 60 liters can work for a small group. Temperature 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, GH 5-12. Slightly acidic to neutral water is ideal. Diet: fine flakes, micro pellets, brine shrimp, daphnia. Very peaceful species, ideal for a community tank with calm fish. Avoid overly large or aggressive species. A planted tank with shaded areas is recommended. Breeding is easy: eggs are laid on fine plants or a mop. Fry are small and require very fine food.
