It reaches 5–7 cm. Its body is tall and laterally compressed, with colors ranging from blue to yellow, iridescent spots and ornate fins. Males have more pointed dorsal fins. Territorial but generally peaceful. Forms monogamous pairs. Sensitive to water quality.

The ram cichlid inhabits clear, warm waters of the Orinoco floodplains, with sandy bottom and dense vegetation. The water is soft and acidic.

Temperature 26–30°C, pH 5.5–7.0, very low hardness. A minimum 80-liter tank for a pair. Water must be very clean and stable. Gentle filtration and regular water changes. Décor with plants, driftwood and hiding spots. Diet: small live or frozen foods, quality pellets. Compatible with other small peaceful fish. Avoid aggressive species.
