Scleronephthya sp. is characterized by its intense red color, due to carotenoid pigments. Its polyps are non-retractile and form a velvety texture. Like S. gracillima, it is azooxanthellate and must be fed. It prefers low light and moderate flow. Its growth is slow and it is sensitive to bacterial infections. It can reach 30 cm in height. It is often confused with Dendronephthya but is distinguished by its firmer consistency.

Expert maintenance only. Mature aquarium, very clean water (nitrates <5 ppm, phosphates <0.02 ppm). Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025. Low lighting, moderate to strong flow. Feed several times a day with phytoplankton, rotifers, nauplii. Direct flow onto the polyps is beneficial. Avoid corals that release toxins. Propagation is difficult; try careful cuttings. Monitor for signs of necrosis. A good skimmer and control of organic matter are essential.
