This surgeonfish reaches 30 cm in length. Its body is oval and compressed, with a distinctly elongated snout giving it a unique appearance. Coloration is dark brown to black, with a contrasting white caudal fin. Juveniles are lighter with patterns. It has a well-developed caudal spine. It is a herbivore that grazes algae. It is active and can be territorial. In an aquarium, it requires a large swimming space. It is less common in the trade than other Zebrasoma.

A minimum tank size of 400 liters is recommended. Maintain a temperature of 24–28 °C, pH 8.1–8.4. The diet should be based on algae (nori, spirulina) and fresh vegetables. It is sensitive to ich and stress. Good filtration and moderate water flow are necessary. Avoid cohabitation with aggressive surgeonfish. It can be kept with peaceful fish. Captive breeding is not documented.
