Description
Betta smaragdina has an elongated, laterally compressed body, metallic emerald green with blue and red highlights. Males have longer, more colorful fins than females. It has a labyrinth organ allowing it to breathe atmospheric air. It reaches up to 7 cm. It is territorial but less aggressive than Betta splendens. It can be kept in pairs or groups in a sufficiently large tank. It builds a bubble nest for reproduction. It is curious and interactive.

Care notes
Tank of at least 60 L for a pair, 100 L for a group. Calm water, low flow. Temperature 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, GH 2-10. Floating plants and hiding spots essential. Diet: carnivorous, accepts pellets, flakes, bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia. Males are territorial, avoid multiple males in a small volume. Compatible with peaceful fish of similar size (rasboras, small corydoras). Perform 20% weekly water changes. Lid required as they jump. Easy breeding in a species tank.
