The Masked Butterflyfish is a fish endemic to the Red Sea, recognizable by its bright yellow coloration and black mask. It is highly prized by aquarists.
Description
Chaetodon semilarvatus has a bright yellow body with a broad vertical black band on the head covering the eye. Another black band is on the caudal peduncle. The fins are yellow with black edges. It is active and swims in pairs or small groups. In an aquarium, it is relatively hardy but requires a varied diet. It can be kept with other peaceful fish. It tends to nip at corals, so not recommended for reefs. Its intense coloration makes it a very decorative fish.

Care notes
An aquarium of at least 300 liters is recommended. Water parameters must be stable: temperature 24-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4. It is omnivorous and accepts frozen, dry, and live foods. It is important to provide a diet rich in spirulina and brine shrimp. It can be kept as a pair. Avoid aggressive fish. Good filtration and regular water changes are essential. Captive breeding is rare.
