Description
Nothobranchius guentheri is a small fish reaching up to 5 cm. Males display bright red, blue and yellow hues, while females are duller. Its body is elongated and laterally compressed, adapted for fast swimming. It has a rounded caudal fin and well-developed pectoral fins. This killifish is a surface dweller that spends most of its time foraging. It is known for territorial behavior among males, especially during breeding. Its peculiarity is its annual life cycle in the wild, laying diapausing eggs.

Care notes
Maintain a temperature of 22–26 °C and pH 6.0–7.0. Water must be very soft (GH 2–10) and low in minerals (KH 1–5). A 20-liter tank is sufficient for a pair. Provide a varied diet of live or frozen prey (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms). Males are aggressive toward each other; keep one male with two or three females. A tight lid is essential as they jump. Add floating plants and gentle filtration. Eggs must be incubated in moist peat for several weeks.
