The spotted mandarinfish is a small, colorful reef fish with striking green and orange spotted patterns. It is highly sought after in the aquarium trade but challenging to keep due to its specialized feeding requirements.
Description
Synchiropus picturatus reaches up to 8 cm. Its elongated body is covered in a bright green reticulated pattern with orange and black spots. The fins are large and ornate, with the first dorsal fin especially tall in males. Males are larger and have a more elongated first dorsal ray than females. Behavior is peaceful and secretive, spending the day foraging for food on the substrate.

Region :
This fish inhabits shallow lagoons and coral reefs, often over rubble or sandy bottoms. It hides among rocks and corals, where it hunts for tiny prey. The waters are clear and well-oxygenated, with stable temperatures. It is usually seen in small groups or pairs.

Care notes
A tank of at least 100 liters is required, with a mature system and a large population of live copepods. Parameters: temperature 24-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025. A rocky setup with plenty of hiding places is essential. Diet must consist of live prey (copepods, brine shrimp); it often refuses prepared foods. It is compatible with peaceful fish but may be bullied by aggressive species. Warning: do not add to a new tank, as it will starve.
