The gem tang is a rare and highly prized fish with a blue-violet body covered in bright yellow spots, resembling gems.
Description
This surgeonfish reaches about 20 cm in length. Its body is oval and compressed, with a tall dorsal fin but less developed than in Z. desjardinii. The coloration is deep blue-violet with many small yellow spots on the head, body and fins. The caudal fin is yellow. It has a well-developed caudal spine. It is a herbivore that grazes algae on reefs. It is generally solitary and territorial. Due to its rarity, it is highly sought after by experienced aquarists.

Care notes
A minimum tank size of 300 liters is required. Temperature should be 24–28 °C, pH 8.1–8.4. The diet must be rich in algae (nori, spirulina) and vegetables. It is sensitive to stress and disease; quarantine is recommended. Avoid cohabitation with other surgeonfish in a small volume. Powerful filtration and moderate lighting are advised. It can be kept with peaceful, non-aggressive fish. Captive breeding is unknown.
