The goldfish is one of the most popular aquarium fish in the world. Easy to keep, it comes in many colorful varieties.
Description
Carassius auratus reaches 10-30 cm depending on variety. The body is stocky and laterally compressed. Coloration ranges from red-orange to white, black, calico or pearl. Many selected varieties exist: veiltail, lionhead, ranchu, oranda, bubble eye. It is a gregarious, hardy and cold-tolerant fish. It can live 10-20 years in ponds. It is omnivorous, accepting flakes, pellets, blanched vegetables and brine shrimp. It produces a lot of waste, requiring good filtration and a large volume.

The goldfish lives in temperate freshwater: ponds, pools, lakes and slow rivers. It tolerates cold water (10-24°C) and a wide range of parameters. It is a species domesticated for over 1000 years in China.

Care notes
A pond or aquarium of at least 150 L for a small group, more for long-finned varieties. Cold water: 10-24°C, pH 6.5-8.0, GH 8-25. Strong filtration (goldfish are heavy waste producers). Hardy plants. Omnivorous: flakes, pellets, small blanched vegetables. Avoid tropical tankmates that need heat. Very social, keep in groups. Plan a large volume for adult growth.
