The bumblebee snail is a small marine gastropod with black and yellow bands, popular in reef aquariums as a scavenger.
Description
Engina mendicaria reaches an adult size of 2 to 3 cm. Its shell is conical, thick, with prominent spiral ridges. The coloration is distinctive: alternating black and yellow bands reminiscent of a bumblebee. The body is cream-white with a long retractable proboscis. It is a nocturnal and secretive snail. There is no obvious sexual dimorphism.

Engina mendicaria is found on coral reefs and rocky substrates, often under rocks or in crevices. It prefers shallow areas with good water flow and abundant organic debris. This snail is nocturnal, hiding during the day. It feeds on detritus, carrion, and small invertebrates.

Care notes
A tank of at least 10 gallons (40 L) is recommended for a small group. Water parameters must be stable: temperature 22-26°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025. A sandy or rocky substrate with plenty of hiding places is ideal. Omnivorous, it feeds on leftover food, detritus, and small invertebrates; it will also accept frozen meaty foods. Caution: it may prey on small ornamental snails. Generally peaceful but can be competitive for food. Calcium supplementation is beneficial for shell health.
