The Multiband cichlid is a small dwarf cichlid that lives in snail shells. It forms colonies and is very popular in the aquarium hobby.
Description
It is one of the smallest cichlids from Lake Tanganyika, reaching only 5-6 cm. Its body is elongated with numerous dark vertical bands on a beige background. Males are slightly larger and more colorful. It lives in colonies in sandy areas where it uses empty snail shells as shelter and breeding sites. Its behavior is territorial but the colony is organized hierarchically. It feeds on small invertebrates and plankton. Breeding occurs inside the shells, with the female laying eggs inside and the male fertilizing them.

Care notes
Water parameters: temperature 24-26°C, pH 7.8-9.0, GH 10-20, KH 10-20. A gentle filtration is preferable to avoid disturbing the shells. Feed an omnivorous diet: micro-pellets, brine shrimp, daphnia, and fine granules. A tank of at least 60 liters is sufficient for a small colony. The substrate should be sandy with many empty snail shells (e.g., escargot shells). It is peaceful within the colony but can be territorial with other bottom-dwelling fish. Avoid very large or aggressive fish. Breeding is easy if conditions are met, with fry growing inside the shells.
