The blue discus is a South American cichlid renowned for its round shape and bright colors. It is considered the king of the freshwater aquarium.
Description
The blue discus has a disc-shaped, laterally compressed body with long dorsal and anal fins. Its base coloration is electric blue with darker vertical stripes. Many selected varieties exist. It is a schooling fish that lives in groups. It is sensitive to stress and requires impeccable water quality. Adults reach up to 15 cm in diameter.

The blue discus lives in calm, acidic waters of Amazonian rivers and lakes, often near wooded banks. It prefers shaded areas with submerged roots and dense vegetation. The water is very soft and rich in tannins.

Care
Care notes
Keep discus in groups of at least 5 in a minimum 300 L aquarium. Water must be very acidic (pH 5.5-6.5) and very soft (GH 1-4). Ideal temperature is 28-30°C. Weekly 30% water changes are essential. The setup should include roots, robust plants, and a dark substrate. They are carnivorous: feed quality frozen foods (artemia, bloodworms) and specific pellets. Avoid aggressive fish; tetras and corydoras are good tankmates.
