A soft coral with pulsing polyps, forming umbrella-shaped colonies. Very popular for its rhythmic movement.
Description
Xenia umbellata has a thin stalk and an umbrella-shaped capitulum with long feathery polyps. The polyps pulse characteristically, opening and closing their tentacles. This pulsing is linked to photosynthesis and nutrient uptake. Colonies can reach 15 cm in diameter. They are beige, brown or sometimes green. The species is sensitive to parameter changes and can decline quickly. It reproduces by budding and fragmentation.

Care notes
Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.024-1.026. Moderate lighting (PAR 50-100), moderate flow (essential for pulsing). Nitrates <5 ppm, phosphates <0.05 ppm. Feed with phytoplankton or fine liquid foods. Minimum tank volume 50 liters. Avoid fish that nip at polyps. Compatible with shrimp and peaceful fish. Fragile, requires stable water. Can become invasive under good conditions.
